Treasurer Stacy Garrity Looking to Honor Grandparents with Unclaimed Property this Grandparents Day

Harrisburg, PA - In honor of Grandparents Day, which will be celebrated this Sunday, Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced today that more than $9 million is owed to the 38,000 Pennsylvanians who have the words grandfather, grandmother, gram, grand, mimi, nana, papa, pops, family, or September in their name or business name.

“On Grandparents Day, we pause to honor our grandparents for the wisdom they offer and the joy they bring to our lives. It’s also a great time to remind people of all ages to check and see if they own any of the $4 billion in unclaimed property that Treasury is currently holding. It’s easy to find out – just visit our website, and in just a matter of minutes you’ll see if any money is waiting for you – or your grandparents.”

Unclaimed property includes things like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks, insurance policies, tangible property like the contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes, and more. The state’s unclaimed property law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to Treasury after three years of dormancy.

Last year, Treasury returned more than $135 million to Pennsylvanians. Treasury is currently seeking the owners of more than $4 billion in unclaimed property. About one in ten Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed property, and the average claim is worth nearly $1,500.

Most tangible items may be auctioned after three years if the rightful owner does not come forward, and auction proceeds are kept in perpetuity for rightful owners to claim. However, Treasury never auctions military decorations. To see if a military medal earned by one of your grandparents is waiting to be claimed, visit https://unclaimedproperty.patreasury.gov/en/Medals, where you can search by name or review the master list of all medals currently in Treasury’s vault.

And search Treasury’s general unclaimed property database to see if you or someone you know has property waiting to be claimed at patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property.
