Philadelphia, PA - Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity, Sen. Nikil Saval (D-1), Sen. Anthony Williams (D-8) and Rep. Regina Young (D-185) today announced that more than $46,000 in unclaimed property is being returned to residents of Philadelphia following the legislators’ recent Unclaimed Property Day event at Eastwick Library.

“This was an incredible event. I’m thrilled that we reunited so much money with its rightful owners, and I want to thank Sen. Saval, Sen. Williams and Rep. Young and their staffs for helping to make these returns possible. I encourage everyone to check our website today – it only takes a couple of minutes to see if any of the $4.5 billion in unclaimed property we’re working to return belongs to you!”

Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity

“One in every 10 Pennsylvania residents has unclaimed property—often, these are important resources that their families never realized they had coming to them. Our government is at its best when it meets the needs of its people, and I was honored to collaborate with Treasurer Garrity, Senator Anthony Williams, and Representative Young in connecting our constituents with their property. We look forward to this as the first of many such events to ensure that our neighbors receive the services they deserve.”

Sen. Nikil Saval (D-1)

“With so much noise going on today, I’m so excited to report that we are able to bring some good news! Whenever we can put money back into the pockets of the people we serve, especially during these times, it’s great! Continue to reach out to our office so that we can keep you connected to the news you can use.”

Rep. Regina Young (D-185)

Residents stopped by the Eastwick Library on November 18, where they were helped in their search for unclaimed property by staff from Treasury and the legislators’ offices. As a result, $46,060.34 worth of unclaimed property is in the process of being returned to nearly 50 individuals identified as the rightful owners, including one library employee whose family member was owed $33,640.

Unclaimed property can include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten safe deposit boxes, and much more. State law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to Treasury after three years of dormancy.

Treasury is working to return more than $4.5 billion in unclaimed property to its rightful owners – including nearly $733 million owed to residents of Philadelphia. The average claim is worth about $1,600, and more than one in ten Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed property.
