Treasurer Stacy Garrity, Rep. Parke Wentling Return Tens of Thousands in Unclaimed Property to Mercer County Municipalities

MERCER COUNTY - Treasurer Stacy Garrity and Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Mercer) announced today that tens of thousands of dollars of unclaimed property has been returned to municipalities in Mercer County.

Rep. Wentling and Treasurer Garrity attended the Mercer County Association of Township Officials Fall Convention, where they conducted a clinic to check whether the townships of Mercer County have any unclaimed property sitting in the treasury’s vault. Searches uncovered tens of thousands of dollars in total, belonging to many different townships.

During the event, Rep. Wentling and Treasurer Garrity presented a check of $1,800 to Shenango Township officials. This money was discovered during an unclaimed property clinic hosted by Wentling at his Shenango Valley District office earlier this year.

Rep. Wentling and Treasurer Garrity also presented a check to officials at the City of Farrell Municipal Building. Due to new unclaimed property being identified, Farrell has now received nearly $46,000 this year.

“I am happy to have partnered with the treasurer’s office and to get Farrell and Shenango Township’s money back where it belongs. While I know all the state’s unclaimed property is safe with the state treasury, it should be returned to its rightful owners. I’m thankful Treasurer Garrity and her staff visited the 7th Legislative District to get this money back in the right hands.”

Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Mercer)

“We’re working to return more than $15.4 million to the people of Mercer County. We’ve returned more than $3.5 million since January of 2021, but there’s more to be done. Returning unclaimed property is one of the most important things I do as treasurer, and Rep. Wentling is a fantastic partner. Inflation is still hitting us all every time we go to the grocery store, so getting this money back to hard-working Pennsylvanians really matters.”

The Pennsylvania Treasury Department is working to return more than $4.5 billion in unclaimed property to its rightful owners. More than one in 10 Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed property, and the average claim is worth about $1,600.

Residents of the 7th Legislative District can contact Wentling’s Shenango Valley district office at 724-734-5980 or the Greenville office at 724-638-4101 to make an appointment to check whether they have any unclaimed property.
