Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity

“I applaud the Treasurer and her team for their proactive work in reconnecting Pennsylvanians and entities with their unclaimed property. This return to American Legion Post 778 is great example of what it looks like to work together to get money back where it belongs.”

Senator Scott Hutchinson (R-21)

“Treasurer Garrity and her team have creatively found ways to streamline this process, providing better notification for Pennsylvanians and greater efficiency in joining unclaimed property with its rightful owners. I applaud their assistance with American Legion Post 778’s claim along with the help they have provided to all of the other organizations and individuals across the Commonwealth.”

Representative Marci Mustello (R-11)

The $1,100.00 returned to American Legion Post 778 includes one individual property, an uncashed check, from 2021. How the funds are spent will be determined by the Legion.

Treasury returned the most unclaimed property ever over two consecutive years, returning more than $500 million to the rightful owners. Since taking office, Treasurer Garrity has returned more than $880 million in unclaimed property.

Treasury is working to return more than $4.5 billion in unclaimed property to its rightful owners, including more than $27 million owed to Butler County residents. More than one in ten Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed property, and the average claim is worth about $1,600.

Unclaimed property includes things like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks, insurance policies and much more. State law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to Treasury after three years of dormancy.

Unclaimed property can also include tangible items, such as jewelry or other valuables stored in abandoned safe deposit boxes. Tangible property may be auctioned by Treasury after three years of searching for a rightful owner. All auction proceeds are available in perpetuity for a rightful owner to claim.

Treasury often receives military decorations and memorabilia as unclaimed property and works diligently to find the veterans who earned them or their families. Military decorations and memorabilia are never auctioned.

Since taking office, Treasurer Garrity has returned 491 military decorations and memorabilia, including 12 Purple Hearts, one Gold Star, and three Bronze Stars. About 480 military decorations remain in Treasury’s vault. Anyone wanting to help Treasury find the rightful owners can visit patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property/medals.
