Why is Population Growth important?

Changes in population growth can have long-term implications for a state, including size of the labor market, overall economic growth, allocation of federal funding, and political representation. Pennsylvania is growing, but at a slower rate than the rest of the United States. In fact, during 2024, Pennsylvania populate growth was half that of the 50 state average. States with slow population growth face serious risks to future fiscal health if the trend persists over time.
