What is the Unemployment Rate?

The unemployment rate is widely used to account for broad changes in the labor market and measures the percentage of unemployed workers among the U.S. labor force, specifically those actively seeking employment or already employed. Due to COVID-19, the unemployment rate had risen sharply across the United States, reaching its highest levels since the Great Recession. The monthly unemployment rate can often reflect general shifts in economic conditions, but should be observed alongside other key workforce metrics to determine the health of the labor market.
